With Sens. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) locked in a statistical dead heat, the stakes of the Saddleback Civil Forum with Rev. Rick Warren could not have been higher. Warren, who was urged to ask some weighty values questions, did not disappoint and drew some stark contrasts between the candidates on key issues. When asked about abortion, Obama said, “I am pro-choice. I believe in Roe v. Wade…” During McCain’s turn, the Arizona senator said plainly, “I am pro-life, and my administration will be a pro-life administration.” To the question of marriage, Obama gave a textbook definition, “the union between a man and a woman.” He stated that “as a Christian, it’s a sacred union,” but when pressed if he would “support a constitutional amendment with [his] definition,” Obama replied, “No, I would not.” He said, “I am not somebody who promotes same-sex marriage,” despite his published letters to the contrary…
